RE: 2008 Ford F350; 973 Miles And 102 Gallons Later

A little more information.
The terrain was mostly flat in Illinois and Indiana and rolling hills in Iowa. All of the mileage noted was towing. I still have fuel in the tank from my last fill up in Champaign, Illinois but did not include that in the posted numbers, that fill up was the 973 mile mark. The truck is bone stock and has 6,600 miles on the clock. A note of interest is that the truck has never gone into the regen mode while towing. I can only guess that the higher exhaust temperatures preclude the necessity.

2008 Ford F350; 973 Miles And 102 Gallons Later

Thought some of you might like to see some real world towing numbers on a 6.4 Power Stroke.
Towed the fiver to visit our friends in Iowa for a week and just got back and tallied the mileage for the trip, all hand calculated with every fill up being topped off. The actual figures are 973/102.7 for an average of 9.47 mpg, the computer said the average was 9.6. I was pleased with the numbers which were as good as my 2006 Power Stroke 6.0 SRW with 3.73 gears pulling a lighter fiver. The biggest difference was the power of the 6.4 coupled with the 4.30 gears which made for very few downshifts with the cruise set on 60 and the transmission in the tow-haul mode.
I did not weigh the rig this trip but previously the fiver tipped the scales at 14,400 and change with the truck coming in around 9100 full of fuel and passengers.

RE: Air ride hitch

I've had no problems with my Airsafe Revolution. It uses the nylon bars and steel guides, neither of which show any signs of wear. You might want to take a look at their Air Box upgrade which uses your present hitch head and mounts.
I can honestly say that after towing with an air hitch I would never tow without one.

RE: How to Improve M.P.G. with your diesel

I also agree with DrScud. At 58' and 23,000# traveling in the right lane at 60 mph I will get over if possible for merging traffic but they had better not count on it. It is the merging traffic's responsibility to match my speed not vice-versa. It can't be that difficult if they just pay attention.

RE: King Ranch gear ratio

I ordered the Tow Boss towing package with the 4.30 gears just for the added towing capability. Pulls the fiver like a freight train. Didn't buy it for fuel mileage, bought it to pull. I'll gladly suffer a little at the pump for the extra torque to the rear wheels.

RE: Should We Skip TT and go 5'er?

Just ask how many have gone from a fiver to a tt on the tt forum and how many have gone from a tt to a fiver on this forum.
I have owned both and would just say that there is no comparison between the two. My last three campers have been fivers.

RE: Air bags vs Timbren

I've had both Timbrens and air bags, I preferred the air bags because of the superior ride quality.

RE: Breakaway Controller Mistake

If you're worried about the magnets an easy way to check them is to have someone apply the brakes while you go from wheel to wheel with a Boy Scout compass. If it points to the wheel when the brake is applied the magnet is working.

RE: Air Compressor

My setup is similar to Chickie's above. An on board 120 psi compressor mounted behind the rear seat plumbed to a 3 gallon air tank mounted under the cab. I carry 50' of air hose and can top off all the tires without too much hassle.

RE: Ford's latest reflash does indeed improve mileage

Haven't had the new flash long enough to speculate on the mileage but it certainly cured the cruise control resume issues which I was pleased to see.

RE: 2008 F250 Ford crewcab short bed cover

I have a Lund Genesis roll up cover and really like it due to the fact that it self stores to the front of the bed when I'm pulling the fifth wheel. You can check them out at carparts.com where I got mine. Here is the model for your Ford click

RE: Ford 250 vs 350 4x4 dually

Here's a few before and after picture's. I spent allot of money to learn a dually is the only way to go for any 5th wheel trailer over 13,000lbs. I pulled that trailer for a year with the Dodge 3500 SRW and it did the job OK. Our trailer weighs in empty at 12,900lbs and the SRW truck was a dream to drive and pulled great, but every pound I packed on took a little something away from that comfort zone. By the time we got all our goodies in place that we like to carry from place to place, we are now a whooping 15,000lbs+.
I tell ya what, I fought every guy on this forum about pulling heavy with a SRW truck. See where I am now............there's $90,000.00 worth of pickup's setting in my driveway right now. If I wouldn't have been such a hard head it would only be $50,000. Thank God the wife loved that SRW Dodge, she was ready for a new car and she wanted the Dodge so it all worked out.
Hands down the dually is the only way to go for anything pushing 13,000lbs IMO.
To me it's not about the best truck, it's the safest truck. Good Luck on your choice.
Couldn't have said it any better. Been through three new trucks since 2003 and wish I would have bought the dually to begin with and pocketed the money I spent on all the other 1 ton SRW's. I find that most of the arguments against one ton DRW's come from those who have never owned one.
My 2 cents

RE: Heartland Bighorn

We have a Bighorn and love it. There were a few minor problems which were taken care of during the PDI. This was the third fiver we have purchased from the same dealer, Modern Trailer Sales in Anderson Indiana, and the pricing and support have always been superb. We special ordered our unit and went to the Heartland factory in Elkhart the day it was built for a guided tour. They have an impressive facility and everyone including the factory workers were very proud of their products and eager to answer all of our questions.

RE: 2008 Ford diesel - low MPG?

The salesman was telling the truth about the mpg on the 2008 6.4. Mine gets just what he quoted you and that's if I drive conservatively. Towing 14,500# it gets 8 to 10 mpg depending on terrain at 60 mph with 4.30 gears.
The EPA is the main reason for the lower mileage on the 2008 models.

RE: Scanguage Wins Fox 5 DC: Gas-Saving Gadgets!

My 2008 F250 is still new, but the computer mileage readout seems to have no relationship to any fuel mileage numbers that I can figure out. I always divide the actual gallons of gas used from the actual mileage, and it never matches the computer readout. So, trust those mileage computers as much as you think is prudent.
Mine is dead on within .1 mpg of hand calculation every time. As stated earlier make sure to reset every time you fill and keep in mind that it calculates the mpg across the number of miles since the last reset, therefore the number on the display does not indicate what the real time mpg is but the average since the last reset.
Clear as mud huh?
